The story was The Norwood Builder written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and adapted by Philip Nokes, in the book Sherlock Holmes Stories. The story talks about a desperate young lawyer that is involved in the murder of an old builder and asks Holmes for help.
The story took place at London where John McFarlane a young lawyer, arrived at Holmes´s house asking him for help, because he is involved in the murder of an old builder named Mr. Oldacre. McFarlane explained to Holmes how the facts took place; Mr. Oldacre arrived to McFarlane´s office asking him to write on a formal way his testament, where he leaves him all his money, because he hasn´t any family and knows his parents about a long time ago. That night Mr. Oldacre asked McFarlane to go to his house to give some important papers, when McFarlane left the house forgot his walking-stick. The next morning McFarlane read at the newspaper about the death of Mr. Oldacre and the fact that he was the main suspect. Watson read at the police inform that the backyard of Mr. Oldacre´s house was burn and there they found parts of Mr. Oldacre´s clothes and bones and inside the house the McFarlane walking-stick. Holmes started to investigate about other solution to the case but he only found that McFarlane´s mother was Mr. Oldacre´s fiancĂ© until she met Mr McFarlane. Holmes was starting to believe in McFarlane´s guilty, when the Mr. Oldacre maid found a blood fingerprint of McFarlane in a wall. When Holmes return to the house to see the fingerprint he noticed it wasn´t there when he first saw the house so it had to be put by someone in recent days and made another discovery that the central passage of the first floor of the house was shorter than the second one so he started a fire in the passage and started to shout “fire” and suddenly Mr. Oldacre get out of a hidden room at the end of the passage. He conclude that Mr. Oldacre wanted to take revenge from McFarlane´s mother scorn by taking McFarlane to jail, disappear and start a new life in another place. But they caught him and his maid after he can escape.
This story shows how a bad feeling like the resentment and the anxiety of revenge can’t make a person take bad decisions. Once again the author involves us in the mystery of the story and surprises us with the end with all the details. Once again the most little detail can help Holmes to solve any case he has.
The story is a interesting and captivating tale that I enjoy reading a lot because show us the dark side of a person that can be able to destroy the life of someone just because he wants revenge of something that passes a lot of time ago. This can make us think about the bad decisions that we can make when we have bad feelings.
